Could I be a Cambridge Nightline volunteer?

Volunteering with us is a challenging but rewarding experience. We look for volunteers who are able to listen the concerns of callers, show empathy, and provide emotional support.

We are not an advice service, but we do provide a safe space for students to talk about whatever might be on their mind. We don’t judge, and we understand that the experiences of every caller are unique.

If this sounds like something you could do, we would love to hear from you!

What training will I receive?

All our callers are thoroughly trained in active listening and our core principles during our initial training weekend. You will learn how our principles can be applied to our phone and instant-messenger services.

We will discuss the types of call that we often receive, so that volunteers feel confident and ready to provide support in a range of situations. Ongoing training throughout the year will help you keep your skills up to date.

What is the time commitment to volunteer?

Volunteers usually take four or five shifts per term, which works out to be approximately an evening per fortnight.

Shifts are reasonably flexible, and you can request the times which suit you best. In addition to shifts, there is an initial training weekend and an ongoing training session each term.

How do I apply to become a Nightline volunteer?

We recruit new volunteers twice per academic year, once in October and once in January/February. The application process involves an online form and in-person interview.
